We Are Not Defined by Titles, and We’re Not Limited by Them Either

Titles are temporary. They look nice on business cards and email signatures, but they don’t define who we are or what we’re capable of. Too many people wait for a title before they take action… before they speak up, before they lead. But leadership isn’t something handed to us. It’s something we choose.

In my book Along Came a Leader, I share that we can’t wait for a leader to show up. We need to become one. We need to speak up when others remain silent. We need to stand when others stay seated. Leadership isn’t about authority; it’s about attitude, courage, and purpose.

Each of us has the ability and the responsibility to influence the people around us. We don’t need permission to make a difference. We do it by living the six core tenets I teach in Along Came a Leader: Attitude, Communication, Wisdom, Tenacity, Vision, and Authenticity. These aren’t abstract ideas; they are daily choices. Each one helps us build a culture of trust, creativity, and growth in our schools, classrooms, and communities.

There has never been a more important moment to share the story of what’s right in education. The world needs to hear the truth from those doing the work. Too many others are telling our story for us, and not always getting it right. The time to lead, to speak, and to shine a light on the incredible work happening in classrooms is now .

We are not defined by titles. We are defined by our actions, our service, and our willingness to lead when it matters most.
