Attitude is king.
There are thousands of areas in your life in which you could improve, but I firmly believe the most important area everyone must focus on first is their attitude. In fact, I believe that you could master all of the other qualities, yet maintain a bad attitude and you will fail as a leader and at life. Your attitude is that important!
Conversely, I believe, you could fail at all of the other qualities, yet keep a great attitude, and you will rise to levels of success.
Attitude is king.
You already possess an attitude. How is it working for you? Are you self aware? Are you able to take a step back and reflect on whether your attitude is helping you or hindering you?

- Aerodynamics: The cars with the best mileage have great aerodynamics. They cut through friction and forces working against them. Your job: Cut through the drama. Each day you most likely run into the same people complaining about the same things. Don’t let it slow you down. Identify people, shows, things, apps, activities, that are creating negativity and affecting your attitude. Get aerodynamic and let this negativity pass by you, around you. Don’t bite into the temptation of responding or participating.
- Decrease Mass: Cars that get rid of extra weight get better mileage. Your job: You’ve got some crap you are carrying around and complaining about. Let it go. Drop it. If you can take action toward improving something, then do it, if not, leave it till you can. Quit complaining about it and work on an area in your life that you do have control of and focus on that.
- Additives and Pollutants: Some autos put additives to increase their mileage, and some tanks get polluted with something that doesn’t belong that both drastically impact mileage. Your job: What can you add to your life that would improve your attitude? Could it be sleep, exercise, dietary needs, some fun or something else? What pollutants are clouding and negatively impacting your attitude? Bad food? Bad thoughts? Bad habits?
I am blessed to have the opportunity to present to organizations throughout the year on leadership. About thirty percent of what I share comes from my book on leadership, Along Came a Leader: A Personal and Professional Guide to Leadership. In the book, you learn the how to apply the six primary tenets of leadership to become a successful leader in your home, community and organization. The very first chapter in the book is titled, you guessed it, Attitude.
Attitude is something that I must work on every day just like everyone else. Sometimes I am the encourager helping others with their attitude and sometimes I have friends and coworkers helping me with mine. My best days of course are the days when my attitude is best, my worst days… you guessed it.
Attitude is a choice. We don’t always believe that to be true, but it is. Children and adults alike want to blame their environment, circumstances and others for their attitude, but that simply isn’t the way it works. I have met people with terminal illness literally months left in their life shine like a golden beacon of positivity, and I have seen another blessed beyond belief allow a bad driver on the highway ruin their day, or an insult from superior ruin their career. It’s amazing.
I hope I’ve inspired you to reflect on your own attitude and acknowledge that attitude is important, our choice, and malleable.
